TOPIC: Sharing the KM KnowHow - What's Next ?

A roundtable discussion on who the stakeholders are in law firms and what types of information they most value. From the Lawyers, Management, Administrative and Support Staff, who are they & how knowledge intensive are thier roles?

Our discussion will run the gamut from group based "information need" to the 'sharing of knowhow' while focussing on the practical realationships & roles of these groups as knowledge consumers.

White Board & Joint VALL Meeting

A little late here, but our 'white board frenzy' took place on March 22nd. In just over an hour, we created a five page document detailing different types of content collections that can be found in our law firms. It was more an exercise in 'getting our bearings about us' than trying to create an exhaustive list, but it seemed to go well. Anyone interested in a copy of the document can email me.

Our joint meeting with the Vancouver Association of Law Libraries has also been set for Thursday, May 5th. The speaker will be Gord Holley, who has served on the VALA Executive in the past, and is also the former Administrator at Owen Bird. Gord's topic has yet to be finalized, but will be something close to: The Business Practice of Knowledge Management, with an additional topic thread aimed at Law Libraries and KM collection building. The notice will be sent out via both VALL and VALA, and will be posted on the VALL website.

Legal Industry KM White Papers

KM World published a series of white papers in Aug. 2004 on the Legal Industry. Here's the link.

The second article, Matter-Centric Management: Letting Lawyers Work the Way They Want to Work, touches on an interesting trend - the technological convergence of content & communication. That is, regardless of the software or format, law firms are moving towards managing these knowledge assets (for example, email & documents, among others) together, with a classification structure based around the work flow (ie. Matters), rather than technology or software.

At the most recent meeting, we discussed the Vancouver group 'Knowledge Management Community of Practice'. Here's a link to their website:

We also had a brief discussion of how new vocabulary terms seem to keep popping up, such as "Folksonomy". If anyone wants to do some further reading, the links at the bottom of the Wikipedia page are helpful.
